Overview

Cisco Bit Indexed Explicit Replication (BIER) is a radical advancement in the transport of multipoint traffic for multicast applications and services. It removes tree-building protocols and per-flow tree state from the core, simplifying deployment and troubleshooting of multicast networks. By adding a simple leaf node attribute to the IGP, each packet can carry replication information in the form of a bit mask to be processed for replication hop-by-hop throughout the BIER domain.
