    Team,

Greeting.  Need help in accessing the ESXi 5.0.0 hypervisor loaded onto the UCS-E module.

    Here is the setup:

      Lab Backbone (172.21.61.64 /27)
       Default GW = 172.21.61.65

           +---------+       Trunk     +---------+

I have uploaded the Cisco ESXi 5.0 ISO image onto the ucs-e module and it boots up the image.

I need help in configuring the ESXi side with proper network settings so that vSphere Client can communicate with it.  And, also need help on loading Video Surveillance Manager  (VSM) onto the UCS-E module as one of the virtual machine.

    Please help.

    Thank you,
    John

    John,

I have the following suggestions below.

    1. In the ucs4/0 I'm unclear regarding why you added the server ip address as this cli is ignored by the system.  Please remove that.

    2.  Your ip route should point to the imc ip address specified in the ucs4/0 interface.

    3.  The ESXi host will have it's own unique ip address which you can get from the ESXi DCUI .  You can also assign the host the ipv4 address in the DCUI if you prefer.

    4.  Use the address found or set in item 3 to access the ESXi log into host via vSphere Client.

    5.  If you're going to implement Vlans, once you've created your VMs, using vSphere networking you'll need to create a port group with the respective vlan id and assign the port group to the VM.   You'll then create an ip route in the router that assigns the ip of the VM to the respective vlan.

    Thanks,

    Brett

    Hi John,

We haven't provided specific instructions for ESXi since customers can use various hypervisors or install an OS onto the bare metal.  In general, you'll want to use the KVM to access the ESXi DCUI.  In CIMC click on the keyboard icon.  After a minute or so, the KVM will be loaded and you should see the DCUI. You can then use the DCUI menuing to check for the host IP or assign it.  I recall there's a network configuration menu item.  Once you have or have assigned that IP, then you can use it to log into from vSphere.

One thing I noticed in your router configuration, that you've set the imc access-port to dedicated.  This would mean that you've connected  your ethernet cable from your switch to the 'M' port on the server in order to use this port.  If that was not your intention you may want to set the access to 'shared-lom console' which uses the built in connection from the router.

    Thanks,

    Brett

    Team,

Realized that the network diagram is not clear due to font mismatches.

Please find attached a .TXT file having the same topology information.  Hope this time it comes out neatly :-)

    Thank you,
    John

    Hi John,

Please note that  "server ip address 172.21.61.77 255.255.255.224 default-gateway 172.21.61.68" IOS command is available only for Cisco specific apps and will only be supported in future.
so as Brett mention, remove the server ip address and the ip route to it

    thanks
    Manuka

    Thank you, Brett and Manuka.

I will remove the "server ip address ..." command from the configuration.

Do you have a few minutes to guide me through the vSphere Client setup to access the ESXi hypervisor?  Please let me know and I can setup a webex meeting to get the details of using vSphere Client to create virtual machines.

If not, please point me to documentation that can be of help.

    Thank you and regards,
    John

    Brett,

Thank you for the tips.  Yes, the UCS module's "M" port is connected to an external switch that is connected to the lab backbone.  But, I am not seeing any menu provided to configure the ESXi.

The server does not respond after displaying the following messages:

VMware ESXi 5.0.0 (VMKernal Release Build 474610)

    Cisco Systems, Inc. UCS-E160D-M1/K9

    Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2428L 8 @ 1.80Ghz

Let me know if there is a specific key combination to invoke the manual setup for ESXi host.

    Thank you,
    John

    Hi John,

Regarding the ESXi installation did you use the ISO provided in our tech center knowledge base or something else?  If it wasn't the provided ISO, please download and install that onto the server.

    Thanks,

    Brett

    Yes, Brett.

I have downloaded the "cisco oem lsi tg3.iso.zip" file from the knowledge base web page - http://developer.cisco.com/web/ucse/docs.

Here is the file that was uploaded onto the UCS module.
It is available the AS lab TFTP Server (calo-tftpserver) under "/incoming" directory:

    -rwxrwxrwx    1 908289   1        313362432 Aug 22 23:18 cisco_oem_lsi_tg3.iso

Please let me know if the file size of 313362432 bytes is correct.

    Thank you,
    John

    Hi John,

The md5 value of the iso file is: 531d561ca04f9e8d1bc32f1eea44ea8e .   Please verify that your md5 value matches this one.  If you're using Windows you can get a free copy of winmd5 to check the value.  www.winmd5.com

    Yes, Brett.

The MD5 hash is matching the value you had posted.

Here it is for your perusal:

    jsamson-mac:UCS-E jsamson$ md5 cisco_oem_lsi_tg3.iso
    MD5 (cisco_oem_lsi_tg3.iso) = 531d561ca04f9e8d1bc32f1eea44ea8e
    jsamson-mac:UCS-E jsamson$

    Thank you,

    Hi John,

I've run a few tests in my lab.  I was able to reproduce the message you saw only if I pressed the wrong key during the start of the ESXi installation where it said press 'F11' to accept.  Please try the installation again.  Once the files are installed, I can help you with the configuration.

If you continue to see issues during the install, let's setup a webex.

    Thanks,

    Brett

    Thank you, Brett.

Will setup a webex call this afternoon to troubleshoot this issue further as the module in the lab is not initializing properly.  I have attached a screen recording of the bootup process for your perusal.

    John

    Hi John,

I'm glad we've got your installation working via the webex.  It appears that the issue was that the MacBook Procaptures the F11 key, so our workaround of creating a macro for it allowed us to install ESXi.   I'll mark this thread as answered.

    Thanks,

    Brett
