The final goal I am after is an phone service to allow end users to update the speeddails on a phone without going through the web interface on CUCM; there is a sample app int he IPPhone Services SDK that does exactly that. The only issue with it is that it is written to run agaist UCM 4.x so the AXL provider does not work with UCM 7.1. I was planning on using the AXL wsdl interface that is supplied with the axlsqltoolkit to make the AXL provider work with the current version web service but holy cow is that a giant class that is created with this wsdl file. When I go to instantiate the AXLAPIService it takes around 10 seconds to load that object (I am writting this in C#). Am I doing somthing wrong or is there a better way to get access to these services?

A web service in the end is simply the exchanging of HTTP text messages.  If you don't need the complete abstraction provided by WSDL, and especially if you need only a few basic AXL requests, it can sometimes be very easy just to use an XML DOM object or string parsing to get the job done.
The Java sample code in the AXL SQL Toolkit (download from Applications/Plugins page on UCM webadmin) shows how simple this can be.
